There were places where the future seemed to have been decided long before anyone was born. Sons followed their fathers, familiar streets led to familiar lives and the passing years brought little more than a change of faces. The world beyond the mountains was still there, but few spoke of it. Most had learned to keep their ambitions within the boundaries of what they knew.
He had begun to notice how easily people surrendered the things they once loved. An old guitar left untouched, a forgotten promise, a conversation about the future that nobody seemed interested in having anymore. Some had found happiness in the lives they chose. Others had simply stopped asking themselves what might have been.
The desert held no answers. Its winds swept across the empty roads, carrying dust into houses where generations had grown old beneath the same expectations. He wondered how many dreams had disappeared there, quietly abandoned by people who had once believed they could become something different.
Yet something troubled him more than the prospect of failure. It was the thought of growing accustomed to disappointment, of accepting a life that offered security at the expense of everything he wanted to discover. He could understand why people stayed. Leaving meant uncertainty, loneliness and the possibility of returning with nothing.
Somewhere beyond those distant hills, the world continued without him. He could almost hear it calling on certain nights, when the streets were silent and the lights of the town faded into darkness.
He looked towards the horizon and wondered how many guitars had been left behind in the sand.
His would not be one of them.
